ASTM D3034 SDR35 Sewer Pipe: Check a Supplier Submittal

Check ASTM D3034 SDR35 sewer pipe offers by outside diameter, wall thickness, marking and joint evidence. Avoid nominal-size and SN substitutions.

An offer labelled “SDR35 sewer pipe” is not yet a complete ASTM D3034 purchase specification. The buyer still needs the size basis, actual outside diameter, minimum wall, joining system and supporting product documents. A metric PVC pipe with a similar nominal size or an SN label is not automatically the same order.

ASTM D3034 covers Type PSM PVC sewer pipe and fittings. Its published scope includes materials, dimensions, workmanship, tests, joining systems and marking. The specification uses inch-pound values as standard. For an importer comparing a US project schedule with an export quotation, the useful question is whether the offered dimensional and joint system matches the order—not whether both descriptions contain “PVC”.

D3034 identifies a sewer product system, not a pressure rating

The standard reference tells you which product requirements the supplier claims to meet. It does not replace the project’s installation design. ASTM’s public scope directs installation to Practice D2321; a D3034 product document alone therefore cannot settle cover depth, backfill or traffic conditions. Have those requirements identified in the project documents rather than inferring them from an SDR label.

Keep the specified edition visible. The current ASTM record links to D3034-24e1, while older catalogues may still divide small sewer pipe under D3034 and large sizes under F679. Diamond Plastics’ current sewer page explains the 2024 merger of those specifications. A quotation copied from an older catalogue deserves an edition check; it does not prove that the supplied product fails or passes the current requirements.

For this article, the ASTM public abstract and scope have been checked, not the paid standard’s complete normative tables. The dimensional example below comes from a named manufacturer’s published catalogue. It is useful for spotting a mismatch; it is not an IFAN dimensional commitment or a substitute for the standard and supplier data applicable to your order.

Read SDR35 alongside the size basis and wall table

“Four-inch” is a nominal designation, not an instruction to make the outside diameter exactly four inches. In Sanderson Pipe’s April 2024 sewer catalogue, the four-inch gasketed sewer row shows an outside diameter of 4.215 inches. Its minimum wall is 0.120 inches for SDR35 and 0.162 inches for SDR26. These are the published values for that manufacturer’s example.

An offer headed DN110 cannot be accepted as that four-inch item from the label alone. Compare the offered OD and minimum wall in the same units, then check the joint components against the same dimensional series. Similar descriptions can conceal a different pipe-to-fitting interface. Rounding the labels until they look alike does not resolve the interface.

This comparison isolates a useful procurement distinction: changing the wall designation is not necessarily a change in nominal size or OD. Conversely, retaining an SDR label does not prove that an export pipe has the same OD series. Record each property independently so the purchase order can be checked against the offered model without converting its name into dimensions.

A legible pipe marking is a useful identity check, but it is one part of the evidence. Uni-Bell’s 2016 marking guide illustrates sewer-pipe markings containing manufacturer identity, size, material classification, dimensional designation, standard reference and production information. Treat that illustration as a dated guide, not an exhaustive statement of every requirement in the current edition.

Request a readable marking photograph and the matching product sheet from the offered model. A catalogue page for a nearby size or another plant does not connect the delivered pipe to the purchase order. Preserve the production identifier where supplied so a later discrepancy can be discussed using the actual batch rather than a generic product name.

The matrix is a way to expose missing information, not a compliance certificate. For example, a correct OD row does not establish every material or test requirement. Ask the supplier to link each claimed document to the offered product and let the project’s acceptance requirements determine what additional evidence is necessary.

Keep ASTM stiffness evidence separate from SN labels

SDR35 and an SN class are different descriptions and cannot be substituted by relabelling a quotation. Dimensional information does not supply an unprovided stiffness test result. If the project specifies an ASTM sewer product, request the relevant claimed test evidence for that product. If it specifies an SN class, retain the applicable test method and reported class separately.

Do not convert DR35 to SN8 from a label or assume that a stiffness figure is an operating-pressure rating. The PVC drainage guide provides broader application context; the purchase decision here is the dimensional and documentation match. A pressure-sewer order requires its own product specification rather than a gravity-sewer label with a new service description.

Request the exact sewer range before comparing IFAN quotes

The IFAN product catalogue identifies product families. It does not, by itself, verify a particular ASTM D3034 SDR35 SKU, size range or certification. Ask whether the requested dimensional series and joint arrangement are offered, and request that model’s current TDS and supporting documents before comparing it with a US project schedule.

Keep commercial fields equally specific. Minimum order, available sizes and dispatch timing need written confirmation for the offered sewer range; terms for another pipe family cannot fill those gaps. A comparable quotation states the same dimensional basis, wall designation, joint system and documentary scope alongside its actual commercial terms.

Use the final decision record to distinguish a matched offer from an incomplete one. A missing OD row, unlinked marking or unconfirmed joint series is a question to resolve before the order, not a reason to invent a conversion. Accept the documented match; hold the unanswered fields for supplier clarification.

For the order review, keep the following sequence with the comparison record:

  1. Record the purchase order size and OD basis.
  2. Match the offered model’s minimum-wall row.
  3. Identify the joint system and matching components.
  4. Link the product sheet to readable pipe markings.
  5. Hold unresolved fields for supplier clarification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a DN110 offer automatically the four-inch catalogue item?

No. Compare the offered outside diameter, minimum wall and joint series in the same units; similar nominal labels do not establish an interchangeable interface.

Can SDR35 be relabelled SN8?

Do not make that substitution from a label. Retain the specified dimensional system and the applicable stiffness method and reported class separately.

Does the IFAN catalogue verify a D3034 SDR35 SKU?

No. Request the exact offered model’s current dimensional table, joint documentation and supporting product evidence before accepting its claimed specification.
